James, the sole creative force behind Aphex Twin had been dabbling in club DJ music in late 1980s but was interested in new music techniques and rhythm oriented, with more speed and percussion than early ambient music. Originally recorded onto cassette the album has a sort of lo fidelity sound, making it sound old, weathered and mysterious. Numerous lists have concluded that it is one of the most important electronic recordings of recent years, with it being listed in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” and #92 on NME’s 100 Best Albums poll. Aphex Twin would go on to make a sequel to the album but largely focused his attention on the drum and bass genre and more harsh experimental electronica music.

www.lunga.is —– LungA´s predecessor was a festival named Hljómstefna, first held in 1998. The idea of the festival focused on people interested in music, but the ideology was the same as LungA, that is, to combine various musicians in music making and boost peoples interest in music. The festival contained musical education, synchronization and concerts. Events held alongside the festival were open to everyone and courses were open to all musicians. The festival lived through two consecutive years, but in 2000 the festival was changed with more effort put into widening the idea and focus on working with young people at the ages between 16 and 25 years old. LungA is created. Young people in Seyðisfjörður were unhappy with hobbies available, the only recreation that was available for young people were dances and other night-time musical hobbies and many thought it was getting tiresome and wanted a change. They decided to establish a festival for young people. This group consisted of four persons, Stefán Benedikt, Halldóra Malin, Ólafur Ágústsson and Björt Sigfinnsdóttir. Aðalheiður Borgþórsdóttir, a coordinator of culture and tourism in Seyðisfjörður, helped them evolve the festival. The local youth had to be convinced, as well as the sponsors. Fit and able guides had to be hired to control the workshops. To many the term art was repellent, a change of peoples hearts had to be made. One of the main goals the group had was to increase public interest in arts and culture …
The Musical Enlightenment
The ideas of Rene Descartes had a profound influence upon the men who followed him. Every branch of knowledge and of art was re-examined and reformulated in the light of reason and in the spirit of scientific method.
One of his followers insisted that the end of music was to move the passions and to attain this goal, composers must study the principles of composition in a scientific way. By the beginning of the eighteenth century the art of creating music had become almost entirely rationalized. It came to its richest fruition in the works of Bach and Handel. The two men showed the world Baroque musical architecture at its imposing best. The general basis of the work of both was counterpoint, devised with great harmonic mastery, resting upon physical laws. Bach and Handel represented a trend towards greater regularity of style in the clearly defined types and forms, in a series of standardized formulas, such as the suite, the sonata, the rondo, the opera, the oratorio, the cantata, the concerto, characterized chiefly by highly elaborate melodies and contrasting effects.
The Heir to a long-standing German family tradition of musical service in the church, Bach early in his career made known his goal of creating a “well-regulated church music to the honor of God”. In his pursuit of this goal he absorbed all the various contemporary musical techniques of expressing the passion in order to apply them to the most profound elements of the Lutheran tradition. By employing all the styles of sacred and secular music, Bach created a synthetic art which summarized all the developments of the Baroque era. More conspicuously than any other composer of his day, he also suggested musical techniques, devices and methods, which, with the coming of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, were soon to open up new horizons for music and pave the way for its further development during the next century. In Bach one can see the spirit of the Age of Reason. One cannot imagine what the history of music would have been had Bach never lived, for his rational influence was immeasurable. It was not an overstatement when Schumann(1810-1856) said, “Music owes as much to Bach as Christianity does to its Founder”.
