I take it that you did not shoot RAW + JPEG when you shot the assignment.
The question most of us are asking is why do you need to convert images to bitmap files?
When processing any RAW file, you have a choice of JPEG, TIFF, DNG or PSD. Each of these file types preserve the files colour profile, thus keeping it integrity of you images as it passes from your hands to the designers and finally to the printer or client.
That said, you will first need to process the RAW (NEF) file into a JPEG. Using the JPEG file, then convert to a BMP file.
Your RAW file is something like 11 mb, the processed to JPEG is about 5.5 mb and the resulting BMP file is huge (over 44 mb) and has NO colour management embedded in the file.
You do know of course that you will be changing the gamut (sRGB or AdobeRGB) for your image file’s to some unknown or unassigned gamut.
